Which R9 280X to choose

Bramm17
Go to solution Solved by Bramm17,

MSI/Asus/HIS/Sapphire dual/triple fan coolers are great imo. I am currently using the MSI Twin Frozr 3 7950 and the cooler is great.

Thnx, I went with the Sapphire Vapor X model. For pics check my build log soon :)!

Hej guys,

I have set my mind on a R9 280X but I would like you guys' input on which one to choose. I am mainly going for looks since I have a nice blue theme build (buildlog: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/36288-the-cube-cooler-master-haf-xb/ ).

Upgrading from a Asus Radeon HD 7850 Direct CU II (for sale, anyone in Holland here wanna buy :P?) and I like the Asus design just not the red accents...

I am thinking about the sapphire vapor X: http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1&gid=3&sgid=1227&pid=2024&psn=&lid=1&leg=0

But this maybe too much blue? How will the blue PCB (would have preferred black) look under blue themed LEDs... And any good experience someone with Vapor X coolers?

Also a possibility is the Asus Direct CU II: https://www.asus.com/Graphics_Cards/R9280XDC23GD5/

The look of this cooler, fans, etc looks imo better then the sapphire but just again that damn red accents would have payed lots more if this came in blue...

Or maybe something else? Suggestions are welcome, but the card would have the be max 27,5cm/10.8inch long (dont have more space then that in case) due to push/pull rad. Gigabyte windforce I dont know but just looking at it it looks loud!? Or a club 3D royal king/queen I dont know that brand so much ....

Thanks guys :)!

They are all the same GPU, pick the one that looks the best for you. MSI*, Asus and XFX make my favorite models.

*Their current model has some VRM cooling issues but if you don't plan on OC'ing it should be fine.

Re-painting the accents on the Asus Cards would look brilliant, it takes some skills though.

AMD cards somehow always have red highlights, you either live with it or you decide to color the cooler.

You also could consider an Asus ROG R9 280x/ 7970 Matrix, it gives you voltage control and got some nice glowing letters on the side which change colors (blue - idle to purple - slight load to red - heavy load). Due to the power of the card they almost always run in blue or purple during gaming.

Get Toxic r9 280x for the looks or just get cheapest well-made 7970 you can find, they are the same  card.

I'd wait till the R9 280X power edition come's out (if it ever does :P ) and otherwise get the asus DCII but not the triple slot one

6600K  |  16GB HYPERX  |  GTX1070 FE  |  Z170X-UD3  |  AIR540

The XFX DD model should look good in your PC then, according to the reviews it's awesome.

I don't think so. We'll see a Lightning Edition, however since MSI started the Gaming Series we didn't see any new Power Edition branded cards. That's sad because they really look sleek and run cool

Alright this seems like some good feedback. I will def look into the ROG one with LED lights and maybe painting, and the toxic r9 280x....

Is it just me or does the red colour they use in the gaming edition cards really ugly in pictures? I miss their cards with yellow/blue accents.

Wait for the Sapphire Toxic OC to come out http://www.techpowerup.com/gpudb/b2461/sapphire-toxic-r9-280x-oc.html It will be the most powerful 280X OC'd to 1150MHz (you can even go further than that because of its cooling design). It can go toe to toe with a 780 in SOME games, but seeing as a 780 is 650 dollars, this version of the 280X is a STEAL at the price of 350 dollars which kicks ass lol.

Personally I would have gone with them if they still have the blue accents!

I would definitely recommend the Vapor-X, the blue PCB is covered by a stylish back-plate, the card runs at a very high 1070mhz at stock, which makes it outperform most 770s out there.
The Vapor-X cooler also has a very cool looking illuminated Sapphire logo on the side.

I have blue LEDs in my case, my motherboard is a blue MSI motherboard with blue activity lights. The power edition would be perfect! I really don't know why they are cutting their line down so much, I'm sure a lot of people preferred the old ones.

The backplate looks so nice, but the little bit of blue PCB is such a letdown in my opinion.

MSI/Asus/HIS/Sapphire dual/triple fan coolers are great imo. I am currently using the MSI Twin Frozr 3 7950 and the cooler is great.
