Broken Mute button... Can I macro it?

The mute key on my laptop (and consequently the F9 key it shares) died and it's driving me crazy, so I was wondering if there was a way to macro it?

I've already tried editing it into my current macro script, but it sometimes just sends the text "F9"/"f9" and won't register as pushing the button. I'm running AutohotKey.

I've already tried,

^z::
Send, {F9}
Return

Which should work according to the tutorials, but I can't figure out what's going on.

I won't know you're talking to me unless you reply/quote me.
