the recovery partition has already been deleted i have a recovery flash drive from hp and a copy of the recovery drive on the old hard drive from this computer

I'm not sure if installing on your recovery partition is what you'd want to do. If I remember correctly it's like 500 MB, isn't it? So I would suggest shrinking your windows partition using the "create or format harddisk partition" (or whatever it's called) tool in windows. Then once you have enough space (I think 20 GB should be plenty if you don't plan on storing data there), just run the live cd of distribution of your choosing and if you aren't planning to install arch or gentoo there should be a nice graphical installer that will tell you exactly what to do, will have option "Install *distribution* alongside Windows" and then let you choose the partition you created to install it on.

Ok i will try that and my recovery partition was about 26 gb
