Is putting a 750ti in a 200W PSU safe?

Hi, My brother bought a prebuilt acer aspire a few years ago and he was looking for an upgrade. I opened his side panel and saw lots of dust, and a 200W PSU. There weren't any PCIe power connectors so I told him his best bet was probably to buy a EVGA 750ti. Do any of you perhaps know what would happen if the power supply is too weak? Will it permanently damage components or would I just be able to slightly underclock the graphics card and it'd be fine?

200W is too little even for that GPU considering it's a cheap chinese fire cracker PSU.

If the PSU is unstable you could be looking at a house fire

what are the rest of the PC specs?

 

any brand of the PSU on the side?

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

It has an i5 3350P, 8 GB RAM, two HDD's, nothing too special.

Definitely not enough. 300W is the recommended PSU for a 750ti and you probably have a cheap chinese one in your prebuilt. At best, the computer shuts down. At worst, your system gets fried and a possible electrical fire. 

Please quote our replys so we get a notification and can reply easily. Never cheap out on a PSU, or I will come to watch the fireworks.

check the PSU wiring and see if you are able to change it for a Corsair CX500M

CXv4 are the CX450/550/650. Others are CXv3 or GS.

Surely not if it has 6pin power. For the one that only draws power from PCI-E it could work but im not sure.

I wouldn't. The PSU is too low wattage, and probably can't deliver enough current at 12V.
