Hi there, I've just built a computer using some parts I had lying around and some stuff I've found on ebay. The thing is I tried to boot for the first time today. When the computer powered up it showed me a message that said the hardware had been changed and if i wanted to select auto settings or enter the bios, so i enter the bios and a couple o seconds later i lose video signal and the fans ramp up a bit. I was able to see that it recognized the processor and the ram but not much more. Since then i haven't been able to get it to display anything. The computer will power up, all the fans go at normal speed but nothing happens...

Any suggestions? I have tried a lot of things but so far i've not been successful.

These are the system specs:

AMD Athlon 860k

Gigabyte GA-F2A88XM-DS2

Sapphire HD6850 1GB

1x4 GB Kingston HyperX Fury 2400 mhz (stolen from my main system)

Corsair VS550

I know that the power supply, graphics card and ram do work, since they are or were in use in my main computer, so I'm guessing it's either the CPU or MOBO.

I was having the same issue one 2 computers i built make sure your ram is in the propper dim channel

another thing you could do if you have a test bench is test all the parts untill you find the broken peice if you can describe the error in more detail i can try and help a little more i have worked in a computer shop so i am a little bit knowable

Hi, thanks for the reply. I have tried with two and one sticks of ram ( the mobo only has two slots) and still nothing happens, the first time it did boot it had both sticks installed. As I've said before it doesn't do much now, it powers up but no image display on the monitor, I've also tried with both HDMI and VGA ports.

Sounds like you have a failure to POST. I would say there is a VERY high chance the problem lies with the CPU, motherboard, RAM or power supply (assuming your using integrated graphics) if not include the GPU in that list.

Pay attention to the HDD light, does it do anything or not?

If the light flicks, and the fans are on and spinning then your PC is probably still doing something and you cant see it, thus its probably a GPU issue

Try resetting bios by remving the CMOS chip and also if your confident doing it take off your processor, blow on it, blow on the socket then fit it again (I suggest you also fully remove the power supply and rewire it.
A single connector being 3mm out of its slot on a single side of the slot can even cause a nightmare

The HDD Led is always ON, but there is no HDD connected to the MOBO, since I only wanted to see if it managed to get to the bios. The Athlon has no integrated graphics so I'm using the 6850 (I was using it in my main system just about a week ago and it works perfectly) The RAM is the one I use everyday and works fine too and is less than a year old, and the same goes for the power supply. I have also pulled out the CPU and put it back again, and the bios battery aswell.
