So I will give you bit of my hardware background I currently have x2 500GB HD in my pc that are pooled as mirror and I have a NAS with 500GB that I use for my back up. Now I wondering if it worth changing from pooled storage to setting up raid 1 on my motherboard?

Probably not a better option, onboard RAID is typical not that good. What are you using to pool the drives currently?

windows storage pool. I'm actually all new to this but after losing photos I wanted so redundant storage, the 500 GB are mirror and that is backed up onto me nas.

Windows Storage Spaces is actually pretty good, use it myself. What your doing currently is pretty damn safe, coping it to another system etc.
