Hello everyone,

I am new to the forums and I am seeking an answer for this question here. My old laptop is runing an old intel i3-3120M CPU @ 2.50GHz and GeForce GT 635M GPU. Since my plans on getting a new laptop went to no closer than next year I was wondering if upgrading the CPU will give my old laptop any performance upgrades? I found out that this laptops motherboard supports intel Core i7 3610QM CPU, but it seems that I can't change the GPU, so the question is, will this laptop work better with ugraded CPU and the same old GPU? Laptop has 6gb of ram which seems to be enough, or is it? The laptop is ASUS K55VJ if anyone is wondering. Thanks in advance for any help :)

Does your laptop have a BGA socket or a PGA socket? If it is BGA then the processor is soldered if not, then it is upgradeable.

Depends. Games will still run the same but CPU-bound scenarios will improve.

Though it may also overheat.

I looked it up, the quad core hyper threaded i7 should make the gaming experience a little better in almost all cases. And the 3610QM is overclock-able slightly ;)

1 - no, it won't. The GPU is crap
2 - no, it isn't - cause the laptop can't cool it.

The GPU is indeed quite bad, but for heavily CPU bound games it might help.

About the cooling, it's a 10w tdp difference.

That's quite large.

Cooling could indeed become an issue, although I can't say for sure.

Of course it won't. Your GPU is soldered to the board and it's impossible to upgrade.

It will. Asus laptops in that price range have pretty poor cooling

Yeah a dextop GPU is not going to slot into your slim laptop mate.

That's true.

I would not recommend this CPU upgrade.

You could obviously still try, but chances are your laptop will be unable to cool itself properly, and the CPU will thermal throttle or even damage itself/other parts of the laptop.

I am also not sure if the Adapter has the headroom. 10W may push it over the limits and cause it to overheat as well :D

Haha yeah.

Especially in cheap laptops it's important to keep in mind that these things are often designed to JUST work, with very little to no headroom.

I would not do this upgrade. It's probably also not worth it.

Thank you for your answers and time then, will probably save my money from buying one and will wait some time to be able to just buy a new laptop, also thinking of building my first gaming PC, but the thing is I am on some tight budget, so been looking lots of videos about all these budget builds that seem to work really good, any comments on those?

In today's PC pricing, a 500/600 dollar PC will work amazing, and even cheaper builds will be great.

Yea, my budget would allow something like that. Lots of people are using these CPUs: AMD X4 860K; FX-8320 or this Fx-6300 one, haven't found out which one of these is the best?

What country and max budget? Does it include a monitor/mouse/keyboard?

Unless the laptop is already borderline on the cooling (highly varies), the laptop should take an upgraded CPU provided both socket and BIOS support it. Of course, going from a dual to a quad will add significantly to heat, so some thermal headroom is recommended.

The GPU is quite potato quality however, so a CPU upgrade is unlikely to be of any help as far as gaming is concerned.
