Hello guys, i think i might need your advice. I'd like to build a new gaming rig and i can't decide if i want to play in 1080p or 1440p.
I've made two parts lists, one is a build meant for 1080p gaming, the other one for 1440p. I'm a little bit concerned that the 1440p build might not be as future-proof as the 1080p build. Do you guys think those concernes are justified?

Here are the parts lists:

1080p:   http://pcpartpicker.com/list/dVLF8K

1440p:   http://pcpartpicker.com/list/rcNxcc

Many thanks in advance and best regards from Germany

Alright, thank you very much for your input guys :)
My concern with the 1440p build was that it might not be able to perform more than 60 fps on very high settings in some of the upcoming AAA games, but i think i will stick to your recommendations and go for the 1440p build.

Don't worry about future proofing.

The 1440p build is a better build, but it depends if you want to spend the extra money or not.

Build: CPU: i5 4690k; Mobo: msi Z97 PC Mate LGA 1150 GPU: Sapphire R9 270 Dual X Case: LSP ULTRA ETorque mid-tower ATX PSU: LSP ULTRA 650w SSD: Crucial BX200 240gb HDD: Western Digital Black 1tb RAM: EVGA SuperSC 16 gigs DDR3 (two 8 gig sticks)

It quite honestly depends on whether or not you're willing to spend the extra for the 1440p build. Do you find it worth it to spend the extra 45% or so to get the 1440p build or not? Do you have a budget? Are you paying for this build with money you've been saving up for a while/by buying this build do you have to be watch your spending for a few weeks or month or are you in a good financial situation and have the money to spend on a good, decent system that will deliver a very good experience without having to worry too much about the cost (as long as it isn't overly expensive, of course)?

To be honest, I think that the thing that will make your choice for you is your financial situation rather than anything else. If you don't have a lot of money and have been working overtime, cheaping out on things the last few months, and/or spending a good portion of the savings you've accumulated over the last whatever-time-you've-been-slowly-adding-to-your-savings then maybe you should go for the 1080p build, since the performance/dollar is quite a bit better there. If you have a very decent amount of savings and have a good, secure, well-paying job and are in a pretty good financial state right now and just want a great gaming experience for when you want to just relax and have some fun online by yourself or with friends then perhaps you should go for the 1440p build. Of course, if you're in a good financial state but think that the savings of the 1080p build might be needed in the future you might opt for the 1080p build.

So it comes down to this:

  • If you don't have a lot of money and have been scrambling for the money for this build or think the money saved by going 1080p instead of 1440p might be needed in the future then go for the 1080p build
  • If you are in a good financial state, have considerable savings, and believe you will continue to stay in a good financial state until retirement and would like to have a very good and premium gaming experience for when you want to kick back and have some fun by yourself or with friends get the 1440p build

I hope this helps you make your decision. Both builds are very good for the price and quite honestly I don't have any objections to either. It's not performance/dollar you're looking at, but rather how much money you want to spend.

First of all i would like to thank you for your very helpful and rational words.
I'd say I'm in a solid financial situation at the moment, so I will probably go for the 1440p build.
Many thanks to everyone who replied to this topic, you made it quite a lot easier for me to decide for one build! :)
