Windows 7 update issue

Go to solution Solved by AresKrieger,

Try installing this update (it fixed a similar issue for me)

KB3135445

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=50797

So i had to install windows 7 fresh on a franken-pc (I.e. cobbled together), and I'm getting this weird issue. Where after I install windows service pack 1, and then update windows updater it won't update any further. There used to be a FixIt download from microsoft that fixed it, however they've since taken all these down for windows 7. I tried the manual solution that microsoft suggested (i.e. manual command line service disabling manual updating and manual restarting of the services (BITS and related update services). This failed and windows update is still broken (also breaks the installer service so I can uninstall anything). I've tried downloading and launching the windows cumulative update (essentially service pack 2) standalone installer before and after the installer updates and neither way seems to fix it.

I usually can figure these things out, but I'm stumped now. I don't think the computer's hardware is relevant, but if you want I'll post those specs later when i feel like approaching the machine.
Any suggestions?

This is a common problem with Windows 7 now, installing updates is very painful now that Windows 7 is reaching EOL status in a few years. The reason for it is that there are many, many small Windows 7 updates that Windows first needs to check if they are applicable to the system, or wether they are superseded or not needed anymore etc etc. There's no real remedy, I'd suggest either disabling updates or going for a newer OS entirely. Windows 10 or any Linux distro will do fine, it depends on the hardware if W10 is supported or not.

Windows 10 is unsupported by the CPU, and I kinda hate linux. I know there has to be a way to fix it though, It's just the updater that is messed up, just not sure how to go about attacking it, maybe there is a download somewhere or solution I over looked. And I have like 15 windows 7 keys, I'd like to actually use them.

Would be interesting if that fixed it, I have seen many Windows 7 machines with the same issue which I've all upgraded to Windows 10 just because I thought it was basically unfixable.

Well it depends on why it's not allowing to update after service pack 1, but if it's stuck in a loop where it both can't check for later updates properly since it hasn't gotten this one, and can't get this update since it got the service pack prior (rather than at the same time) then it should work.

I ran into a update sticking point around service pack 1 on my current system and this fixed it both installs (I reinstalled due to malware) so there is a decent chance it can help.
