Hey guys, this is my first post here on LTT so I'll get right into my question! So I finally got my hands on a EVGA 1080 FTW edition and I am super excited about it but, there is one thing I may have over looked. I believe my cpu is creating a pretty substantial bottleneck. I have the i5 -4670k and with games like rise of the tomb raider with everything on max I am getting 40-50 fps opposed to the 144 fps everyone is benchmarking out. Could it be my cpu or could the be a different underlying cause to this substantial difference in fps?

Although a i5 will be a bottleneck at 1080p, it wont be nearly that bad. I would re-post in the troubleshooting section as I dont have that much experience with this. My guess though is a problem with the motherboard or GPU drivers (Don't quote me on this).

An i5 will bottleneck a 1080 at 1080p, but 100 FPS?

So is pretty much any i7 CPU or RAM in existence, because upgrading any of those things from any level to any next level results in increased FPS, even if only by 1, or 5. Basically, everything in existence today is a bottleneck upon some component in any given PC system, and results in some less than maximum possible FPS.

 

Bottlenecking doesn't mean anything unless it's persistent across games, and by a notable amount. I think the OP will not encounter any issue with a GTX 1080 and i5 4690K, especially if they overclock it.

 

OP, I don't know about RotTR, but game benchmark videos often don't have all settings enabled, and sometimes don't mention what they don't have enabled. They just run a game and say "that's the FPS," while using a semi-arbitrary assortment of high detail settings. I'm not saying that this accounts for your FPS discrepancy, but it might be a factor. At any rate, not having an i7 CPU should not ever account for the kind of FPS difference you're mentioning.

Not having an i7 CPU should not ever account for the kind of FPS difference you're mentioning. I would rule it out as the prime factor.

I'm running off of what LTT used in his 1080 benchmarking video where they ran the benchmark. maybe I'm over looking something though. Thank you guys for your help and everything.

At 1080p even the i5-6600K have proven to be a bottleneck sadly... :(

The only real way to see that is by checking monitoring software. get something like GPU-Z and see what your GPU utilization is when you're gaming. Rise of the Tomb Raider is not a CPU intensive game, so it doesn't make sense that your i5 is having issues in that game. More than likely you are playing at a higher resolution or different graphic settings than what your benchmarkers claim.

I do have a 144hz monitor. Once you upgraded to the 6700 did the bottleneck disappear? Thats what im thinking about doing.

That isn't expressly true.... You need to reach a certain FPS for that to happen, you need to be playing the right sort of games that stress the CPU more than normal, and so on.

 

sure, an i5 has the POTENTIAL to bottleneck the 1080. But that doesn't mean that every game is going to run at 10 fps just because you have an i5. You still get a respectable amount of performance out of your game. In most cases, a "bottleneck" isn't as much of a problem as everyone seems to believe it to be. Every single computer in the world suffers from some kind of bottleneck. SOMETHING in their system prevents it from going faster. For some reason, people get all uppity if that ISN"T their GPU.

 

 

That being said, an i5 4670k should be able to handle more than 40-50 fps on Tomb Raider. That game is not CPU intensive at all. If you are only able to get that many fps, then something else is in play. Either a different resolution or graphical setting than your benchmarkers, you have more background applications running which is consuming resources, etc. My money is on different graphical settings though... I can guarantee your benchmarkers are not getting 144 fps with SMAAx4 on at 1440p.

That isn't expressly true.... You need to reach a certain FPS for that to happen, you need to be playing the right sort of games that stress the CPU more than normal, and so on.

 

sure, an i5 has the POTENTIAL to bottleneck the 1080. But that doesn't mean that every game is going to run at 10 fps just because you have an i5. You still get a respectable amount of performance out of your game. In most cases, a "bottleneck" isn't as much of a problem as everyone seems to believe it to be. Every single computer in the world suffers from some kind of bottleneck. SOMETHING in their system prevents it from going faster. For some reason, people get all uppity if that ISN"T their GPU.

 

 

That being said, an i5 4670k should be able to handle more than 40-50 fps on Tomb Raider. That game is not CPU intensive at all. If you are only able to get that many fps, then something else is in play. Either a different resolution or graphical setting than your benchmarkers, you have more background applications running which is consuming resources, etc. My money is on different graphical settings though... I can guarantee your benchmarkers are not getting 144 fps with SMAAx4 on at 1440p.

Yes not all games but people use the same argument against the FX line up so by the rules of LTT it sucks... :(

At 1080p 144Hz your i5 is a major bottleneck. upgrade to a 4790K

My question is about GPU utilization, not is it "running fine". Is GPU Utilization it at 100%? If it is, then you're not experiencing a bottleneck. If it isn't, then something IS bottlenecking it (assuming you're running a program that is actually capable of stressing it to 100%). check your CPU utilization. If your CPU is not at or near 100% utilization on all cores, then that is not your bottleneck either.

Max was at 99%. How do i check the cpu ?
