CPU OVERCLOCK HIGH TEMPS

Hi I overclocked my cpu using the preset in my bios which made it overclock to 4.8 ghz (using xmp) but the temps were high on idle it was 30 C but in stress tests everything worked fine but in the stress test the temp was 85-90 C is this ok?? Or should I down clock it???

That is too hot take it down and what is the CPU?

Pick a voltage and temperature you're comfortable with exposing your CPU to before you begin. Write those down and force yourself to stick to them. Ignore clock speed. Screw clock speed. Do this until the system is able to remain stable at idle post-boot for 10 minutes or so, then power down and head back into BIOS to step the multiplier up again. Do this until you've reached the maximum voltage you're willing to go to. That's the absolute fastest clock speed you can possibly attain within the parameters you've set.

 

Now begin stress testing. If you click on my profile and go to "About Me", you'll see the way I usually go about it. I'm a big fan of stress testing with OCCT because it includes a temperature failsafe. For example, I'm comfortable with my i7-4790K hitting 85C at peak in synthetic stress tests, so OCCT gives me the option to have the test automatically terminate if the temperature goes north of there. If your CPU fails a stress test or temperatures climb too high, shut down, head back into BIOS and lower the multiplier by 1 until it's stable and below your max temps.

 

Once your CPU is able to pass all the stress tests you feel the need to throw at it while staying below your temperature threshold and not throwing errors or crashing, you may consider yourself stable at your system's optimal overclock.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

What do you mean by multiplier, also when I did 4.8 ghz with the preset everything was working fine but the only problem was the temperatures so should I lower voltages?? Also in my bios when I want to adjust the voltages In 4.8 ghz preset or not it won't allow me to change it from 1.475 I believe, so what do I do? Thanks for help

Stop. Research. Read your motherboard's owners manual. Read guides on overclocking that explain what each function is and what it does. Watch some YouTube videos. If you're overheating your CPU and asking questions like this, you're not ready to be pushing for top-10% clock speeds.
