Hello, my friends laptop's hard drive failed the other night and I have an extra ssd laying around so I tried to put it inside his computer but when I try and boot the laptop, it just says Loading windows files then Starting Windows and freezes.

That's because the drivers are not compatible and you will likely need to reinstall Windows.

You will need to force the laptop to boot off the disc using the Boot Menu in the BIOS.

That is exactly what we are doing but it just goes straight to starting windows instead of installing

What kind of options do you have in the Boot Menu?

What kind of Windows disc are you using?

Do you have another PC you can put the SSD into temporarily?

Yeah

Put the drive into that PC(not booting from it) and remove the partitions present on the drive, and put it back into the laptop, and attempt to boot from the Windows disc again.

Okay I think that is not the problem It shows his old hard drive(should have tested this earlier) but it will not boot off of the hard drive for some reason?

Is the old hard drive present?

What do you mean "boot from them"? If the hard drives have drivers that conflict with the laptop's components, the system may fail to boot properly, or at all.

And, if the drives do not have an OS on them, that's fairly self-explanatory.

Okay I mean I guess the problem wasnt that the hard drive failed... The laptop can now see the old hard drive(the one that we thought failed). But the bios will not let us boot off the hard drive, it also didnt let me boot off the ssd when I had it in

Is the Windows disc still present in the system?

Remove all hard drives from the laptop, and remove the Windows DVD as well.

Boot up the laptop; it should say something like "No boot devices found" or try to boot from the Network / LAN ROM.

If it's still attempting to boot from a hard drive or DVD after they've been disconnected, something is very wrong with the motherboard.

Because of the issues you're having booting the laptop, I would put the Windows DVD into the DVD drive, and boot without the HDD attached.

Once you see the first initial Windows installation screen, go ahead and carefully (remember, there's a DVD inside) install the HDD into the laptop.

Then try to proceed through the installation and let us know where that takes you.
