$600 gaming rig

building a $600 rig for a friend already have a case a older 2009ish gaming case with lots of fan spots and usb 2.0 ports and he will just throw a usb 3.0 hub on the front thinking a 4gb or 8gb rx 480 also for the cpu he can go with a older but better cpu like a haswell or a sky lake if he goes with haswell i can sell him my old 8gb corsair vengence thinking a ssd and 1tb or 2tb and a 500-600watt psu any advice

Get a used i5 or i7 as that will be better than a i3 and have overclocking potential. You can get a 2600k and a mobo for less that $300

I'm currently looking for parts for my build too and a little tight on the budget...which trusted retailers would you suggest getting a used cpu from?

All I was doing was giving a suggestion. OP never stated what the rig was for. At 400ish dollars, this does give wiggle room on the budget to change things to get up to the 600$ mark.

single Channel does not matter much and that is a great 350W PSU. it has 40W of headroom

It does in certain games (Battlefield comes to mind) and a whole 40 watts is absolutely nothing. This is also assuming no overclocking on the GPU
