I gained a big amount by doing the ghetto HB bridge with two single SLI ribbons.  The difference is measurable in benchmarks starting as low as 1440p and only gets better at 4k and above.

I would imagine higher res you would see a difference. Maybe HBM2 really needs lots of bandwidth in other places

I was careful to include that caveat. Seems open world ports get the biggest increase. But since most SLI motherboards come with a flex bridge and two flex bridges performance exactly the same as a HB bridge. It's at least cheap to run, if not free if you held on to the flex bridges.

I of course eagerly rummaged through my parts boxes to se if I had enough in case I myself went with two 1080s. Though I dare not call it "getto", as my esteemed colleague has so named it. I prefer to think of it as, frugal.

You actually have to use two separate single ribbons for it to work.  If you look at the traces for a 2, 3, and 4 way bridge, it's not the same thing as running two completely separate ribbons.  Funny thing is, even the really old ones work.  

 

I tried using a regular 2 way hard bridge, but it does't do anything.  Switch to two separate ones and saw a small increase starting at 1440p.

 

After EK starting telling all of the guys with EK water blocks to just use the cheap HB bridge setup, I gave it a shot and it just works.
