The FX series are not what you want for this budget. Wait for reference RX 480 4GBs to come back into stock or pick up a RX 470 if you can't wait. Your call.

i do a lot of multitasking and i've had a variety of intel processors, and since its a 600 budget i figured it wasnt bad hence it found fit more into the budget for a good GPU.

With around a 40% IPC advantage on the i5 plus the faster RAM, the advantage of the 8 cores is not so drastic.

Dual channel in the future... only two DIMM slots, so 1x8GB is a pragmatic choice on my part.  When you have $30 to spare, you grab another 8GB stick.

i7 sandy bridges are not that cheap are they?  You will have to dabble in the used market as well.  He has to be comfortable with going used.

Was referring to the used market, forgot to add that in. Depends if he's willing to do so or not, but processors rarely fail anyways, so it should be quite safe.

I agree, but he has to keep from getting screwed too.  There was an i7 3770K for $165, but it unassumingly says "broken" in the description.  Might be easy to miss for some.
