Windows 10 Does Not Recognize Third Disk

Go to solution Solved by zMeul,

at this point I would've suggested to update the chipset drivers; but seeing as you board is quite old ....... I'm stunned

it might work .. might not, worth a try: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/20775/Intel-Chipset-Device-Software-INF-Update-Utility-?product=1145

it appears to be a classic MS fucked up thing as Intel doesn't directly offer W10 chipset drivers for Z68 and they're distributed via MS only - what you see is what you get

After having disassembled my computer and put it back together again (don't ask), Windows no longer detects my third HDD.

I have a 500GB SSD, a 1TB HDD and a 2TB HDD.

Windows detects the SSD and 1TB HDD fine, but not the 2TB HDD. If I unplug the 1TB drive then the 2TB drive appears after a reboot. When I plug the 1TB drive back in again the 2TB drive disappears.

All three drives are detected and working in BIOS.

The 2TB drive does not appear anywhere in Windows. It is not in device manager, it is not in disk manager, it is not in Speccy. It is gone.

All drives used to appear before I took them out of my PC.

I have tried multiple SATA cables and SATA ports. It makes no difference.

Anyone got any suggestions?

are they both using the same drive letter? you have to go into your drive manager and assign them each different letters so they dont conflict and then they should both appear

if you have windows 10 Just type in the start menu partition and select "create and format hard disk partitions"

from there all your drives will appear, select the drive that windows does not recognize and right click and select change drive letter then select change then in the drop down menu select a new drive letter hit ok and ok and go to explorer and refresh it should appear if not then your issue is else where.

I would check in the Disk Management or DISKPART of CMD to see if the disk is being recognized at all EvilLemur brings up a point that might explain the issue. Viewing the Disk Management or DISKPART will show you all connected disks like in the BIOS. Whether they have a drive letter or not.

More info: I just tried plugging in my SATA DVD burner. It does not get detected in Windows either. It does eject when I press the button though, but it won't read any discs.

I can't reassign any drive letters because they do not appear anywhere. The hardware does not get detected by Windows, at all.

It is not that Windows detects the drive but does not recognize/mount it. It flat out does not appear anywhere. It's like it is not plugged in, until I unplug the 1TB drive.

BIOS detects it though.

You could try reinstalling/repairing the SATA controller drivers.

I am worried that doing this will cause my SSD and 1TB HDD to not get detected.

diskpart just shows the same info as disk manager. Which is to say, it shows my SSD (and the various partitions) and my 1TB drive. It does not show my 2TB drive at all. It's like it isn't connected.

BIOS see's it, OS does not in any form. Somewhere in between it quits. Did you try resetting BIOS?

Sure. Here is the disk manager. There is not much to see though, because Windows does not detect the drive at all.

Not yet, but since BIOS detects it I doubt it will help. I will do that as a last resort.

You said you tried alternate SATA ports but I wonder if this is the circumstance where occupying a specific slot/port disables another. The BIOS might still see it but the OS won't. Alternatively did you try plugging both drives into another computer simultaneously.

This fixed it!

Thank you so much for the help.

I downloaded the Intel utility (called Intel Driver Update Utility), ran it and now it detects all my hard drives at the same time. It still doesn't detect my DVD burner but I can live without that.

yeah with drives its a start from the top and go down the list, its strange that drivers would do that as usually chipset drivers are replaced with default ones in windows 10. but since your system is a bit older and not windows 10 ready it could have caused corruption in the drivers.

Well glad you got it fixed.
