our kids are always on one sort of electronic communication device, be it desktop, laptop, tablet, or phone. and to be honest, the wife and i spend a fair amount of time on them as well.  my wife and i are both disabled, and it seems every time one of us want one or both of them, we either have to go and get them, or yell at the top of our voices to get their attention. and i HATE yelling. i really do not know how to set up a lan. though when they were not looking, i did manage to set up all the computers on a lan. meaning that i "connected them to talk to each other so files could be shared. but i am not sure if i can do that to android tablets / phones.  i just do not know what to do with them from that point. is there a way to set up an intercom type program that would allow one or both of us to "page" or notify them that we want to talk with them? preferably something that would not totally mess up one of their online games, but still get thru when they were doing something on the computer.

You could use Discord, setup an account for each person in the family and voice call them on it. There are apps for PC, Mac, iOS, and Android.

Its a gaming VOIP solution, so its great about not disrupting a game.

If you want a hardware solution, 3CX with some SIP phones will work, but its a PITA to setup.

i do not know much about skype. my son set it up once so i could video conference with my brother. but i did not know it could be used in the same household.

It can be used anywhere! The good thing is it is free, secure (as far as we can tell), and available on basically every platform. You can use it to chat or voice/video call.
