i3 6100 vs Pentuim

My neighbor is building a PC for himself and asked me for some advice, i3 6100 or Pentium ( Sky-lake  )

 

Here's what he told me he wants to do with it

 

1. Excel sheets, Word,etc

 

2. codes occasionally 

 

3.Internet browsing

The Pentium seems like the best. Invest the money on an SSD rather than the CPU.

Personally, I would go with the i3. I buy my computers to last 6+ years. The last computer I retired last year was 15 years old with a pentium 2.8ghz, top of the line at the time. If he is the same way, he will appreciate the i3 a couple of years down the road.
