Need help deciding between two SSD's!

Go to solution Solved by WoodenMarker,

Unless you need the extra speed, go with the cheaper drive.

The main benefit of getting a ssd which is the random access times and read speeds won't be hindered by sata 2.

I'm thinking of buying a Samsung 850 Evo 256 gb SSD tomorrow only for the OS. I have a motherboard that supports only SATA 2. I know I won't be able to use the full potential of the drive, but I will upgrade my MOBO next year.

I wanna know is it worth getting the 850 Evo or should I get the 750 Evo? I know the 850 has 3D NAND & a longer warranty, but I only need the drive for my OS. And I'd be saving some cash if I buy the 750 and I could maybe buy something else later, like an additional ram stick, etc. Thanks!!

If it's just for the OS, get a basic 120GB SSD, they are easily afforded, and would leave enough for a few more parts while you are there :)

PC - NZXT H510 Elite, Ryzen 5600, 16GB DDR3200 2x8GB, EVGA 3070 FTW3 Ultra, Asus VG278HQ 165hz,

Mac - 1.4ghz i5, 4GB DDR3 1600mhz, Intel HD 5000.  x2

Endlessly wishing for a BBQ in space.

You say that, but I've been watching the 850 Evo on Amazon UK since December and it's gradually increasing in price.

I edit my posts a lot.

I already have a 1 tb Seagate drive which I use for everything. Yeah SSD's are getting cheaper over time but I can't bare the startup and loading times of the OS and the programs. I could go for a 120gb drive. Question is would it suffice?  Because people often say that getting a 256gb ssd for the OS is more future proof.

I really don't mind getting a 120gb SSD only for the OS. I just hope it'll be enough with all the Windows updates and other programs, etc.

I run a 120GB SSD Kingston in my older i5 3330k downstairs, runs Win10 just fine, even with room for ESO installed on it.

Okay, but I dont think you'll see any performance increase as you are using SATA 2
