What is an APU?

I have basically no experience in APUs' whatsoever... I know the basics, they double as a CPU and GPU, but why are some so cheap, like the AMD A6-5400K, costing only about $30...

An APU is like a standard intel chip that has a cpu and a gpu but AMD sells apu's with relatively stronger gpu's attached.

They are designed as budget parts and the cpu on them is quite lackluster even by the standards of the time.

Actually you totally can... The 5665C and 5775C both have better GPUs than anything AMD offers as do all of the new skylake based iris (HD540 and HD550 are small steps over the broadwell igpu's while HD580 parts obliterate the competition.)

Although no skylake iris gpu has been made available in a LGA socket (only BGA).

Besides that's top end to top end. The A6-5400k is much worse.
