Experiences with changing MB/CPU on a desktop

I am aware of some problems that might arrive with licensees after making such a big hardware change like the MB and CPU or even just the MB.  Hypotheically, if i had a stock MB from a dell studio xps 8300 (custom case, ATX) and wanted to upgrade it, would it be compatible with the stock CPU and what software problems would I run into after booting it up?  What are the various price ranges?

Price ranges for what? The motherboard?

and then what socket?

If you have windows 10, and change the motherboard/cpu you will need to reauthenticate the OS, put with a smartphone it isn't too bad of a process.

I have the free win 10 license and from what I've read, all I have to do is call MS, explain the situation and they'll change the key to match.  How about the drivers needed the various MB components?

Price ranges seems to be about the 100-150 mark which isn't too bad.
