No, it is not possible. the Thunderbolt connection is necessary for the high data transfer rates need to sync the CPU and GPU.

i5 6600k and GTX 1070 but I play 1600-900. 1440p BABY!

Still, don't put too much faith in my buying decisions. xD

It uses USB C not just for the display but for the sheer bandwidth that USB C can push. HDMI is nowhere near fast enough.
