well the 290x is rumoured to cost more than $500 for a start.

So go with the 280x.

 

Also, I can't stand when people SLI low end cards. To me, it just bothers me.

 

760 is about 15 to 20 frames less than a 770.

It was just a thought since I heard they will beat a 780

290X would be best, but it's going to cost more than 500$ so out of your budget. The R9-280X looks awesome, great bench competing with the 770, but 300$ instead of 420$+.

Don't SLI/CF right away, you'll just limit yourself. Try to get the single most powerful GPU that you can afford, which would be the 280X.

It is rumored to have simmilar performance compared to the 290x, but significantly cheaper.
