How much memory is enough for gaming?

VRAM is diffrent from RAM

VRAM is allocated to GPU

i dont think your laptop has 4gb vram, i think you mean ram

TYPO, I know the difference, I was thinking about something else. While typing something else.

4GB is minimum for gaming.

8 GB should be enough. Games are starting to recommend 8 so yeah

If you want to "future-proof" it, 16 GB will be more than enough.

Try to get a single 4gb stick with decent speed. then in the future he can buy a second 4gb stick to make it 8gb. Honestly i don't think games will require more than 8gb in the next 2~3 years unless something drastically changes.

Get what you need and not what you want and never get a stick(s) with the plan of dropping the same sticks later down the line to double capacity. Get what you need now.

The reason I say get what you need now instead of doubling with the same model in the future is that the model in the future might not be the same internally. People who used G.Skill Sniper ram in the past, for example, were pretty pissed when some found their systems unstable after adding another kit and having reps tell them they should have gotten a 16GB kit from the start instead of adding another 8GB kit. Not sure about other makes and models, but I do know a dimm made today is most likely not going to be the same made 1 year or 2 from now.
