Burned Ram?

So I built a pc for a friend a while ago everything was working fine then one day he tells me that the pc was no longer posting this was after 3 months or so, (he knows very little about computers) so I go and check it out and it turns out the RAM wasnt working so I let him borrow some of mine and it worked like a charm! So I decided to inspect the ram he was using before and it only had menory chips on one side of the stick and discoloration so I was wondering how this may have happened This happened to both 4gb sticks he had

id pull the CPU and check it that happened to the ram it cant hurt to check and a CPU is way more costly than ram.

but then again don't tempt fate
