I'd say the i5 route because it's going to help you play more games in the long run but I wouldn't get a 960... a 970 is the lowest I would go unless you're just willing to wait long enough to save a little more money for the 1060.

It would largely depend on the games you wish to play. the 6100 could run into some issues on highly CPU intensive games. I would recommend saving a few more bucks and getting the 6500 AND 1060. the difference between a 6100 and 6500 is like 80 bucks. just save the extra little bit and get both. You will be disappointed one way or the other if you do not.
