Need help with ethernet switch

ljh25

At the moment i have a single ethernet cable running to my room, which is connected to my pc.

But I also want to connect my laptop at the same time.

I did some research and came to the conclusion that I need an ethernet switch.

I have a cable running from my router to a patchpanel, then a cable goes to my room, into one of these: https://netwerkproducten.com/webshop/wandcontactdoos-opbouw-enkelvoudig-cat6-p-4243600.html (don't know the name in English). Then a cable goes into my pc.

My question is: can I use an ethernet switch with the product which I linked?

I was thinking of buying this one:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TL-SG1005D-V6-0-5-Port-Switch/dp/B00YMTNVEM

Thank you

Meh not that fond of TP-link I would just go for Netgear - TP link is a bit cheap and nasty unless you go to the more expensive ones - We use either Netgear / Cisco at work so I would go for a nice Netgear one!

Plus cheaper if bought in uk for some reason :P

Yeah any ethernet switch should work for what you're wanting to do.

I am a paid professional, but only when I am at work...and getting paid.

What is your internet connection speed?

Are you planning on doing any file transferring/streaming between your desktop and laptop?

If your internet connection is over 100mb/s, you will want a gigabit switch.

If you plan to transfer stuff between your computers or you want to stream between computers, you will want a gigabit switch.

The one you linked originally is a gigabit switch.

If your internet speed is less than 100mb/s and you're not going to transfer/stream between computers, you could settle for a 10/100 switch. They are cheaper but you're stuck with a pretty slow network with them.

As noted by previous posters, any network switch will do. As clarified by the previous post, your only real choices here are going to be if you want a 10/100 Meg switch, or a 1000 Meg (Gigabit) switch.

Any network switch should do. The main differences between ethernet switches is if they are Gigabit or "Fast Ethernet." If you don't have an internet connection above 100mbs or have a NAS, there is really no reason to get a gigabit ethernet switch over a Fast Ethernet switch other than if you plan on upgrading your connection.

There is nothing wrong with TP-Link switches. I have an 8-port Gigabit one, and I've used and/or had other people buy at least a dozen TP-Link switches. Never had an issue.

Netgear switches are good too. But an unmanaged consumer grade Netgear switch will be nigh identical to a TP-Link one. Buy whichever is cheaper in your particular region.

At work we have had a lot of dead ones.... Only reason why I prefer netgear! Never had a dud netgear!

Not saying that they are crap or anything I just personally prefer netgear! (i personally use a TP-LINK router! / PFSENSE dependant on which network I'm on
