I'm sure this gets asked a hundred times so I apologies, but if I'm going i5 6500 or 6600 with no OC, I'm right in thinking there is no need for a 'z' board and a 'h' will do?

if so

or

similar price, similar stats, does it just come down too which I think looks better? I think Asus is a more reliable brand but I think the 'pro gaming' text looks a bit tacky and with the MSI, surely with more LED's it'll go faster? ;)

No need for a Z board if you have a locked CPU.

As for the two boards shown, they are both fine but I would go for Asus as they are of better quality in my opinion. Others opinions may vary. If you want LED's you could go with a LED lighting kit.

Main System Specs:

  • Intel Core i5 6500 3.2GHz CPU
  • Gigabyte GA-H170-D3H Motherboard
  • Kingston HyperX Fury 16GB 2400MHz, Gskill Ripjaws 8GB
  • Asus GTX 1060 Turbo
  • Kingston HyperX Savage 240GB SSD
  • Seagate 1TB NAS Grade HDD x2
  • Thermaltake NiC F3 Cooler
  • EVGA Supernova 750 G2 Power Supply
  • NZXT S340 Red/Black Case
  • Noctua NF-F12 Fan x2

Laptop Specs:

  • Intel Pentium N3700 CPU
  • 4GB Kingston RAM
  • Intel HD Graphics
  • Windows 10 Home

Peripherals:

  • Microsoft Wired 600 KB
  • Dell 2003 Mouse
  • HP Compaq LA2206x Monitor
  • Logitech X530 5.1 Speakers
  • Roland RH-5 Headphones

If your not going to OC then really any board will do for you as long as it has the features you want and need. I put a MSI Eco H170 board in my wifes build with her i5 6400. Just depends on what you need/want out of your board. But I do agree to stay away from Asus due to horrible customer support.
