Hi All!!

I just built my first PC ever and it was an unRAID system to utilize the NAS and Windows 10 VM in one system. Everything worked without a hitch really with the following hardware (this was a somewhat budget build to understand my capabilities):

CPU:  FX-8300

MOBO: Asus M5A99FX Pro R2.0

RAM: 16GB Hyperx Fury 1866mhz

GPU:  Gigabyte GTX 660 and GTX 620 OEM for the host

I just saw the video of LInus attempting to overclock the 7 gamers 1 cpu rig and it did not seem to go well.  I would like to perform a modet overclock on the FX-8300 but is this totally not recommended with UNRAID?  Also, it appears that monitoring the hardware through the VM is basically impossible as far as seeing CPU voltage etc.

Let me know your thoughts,

You can oc the cpu just fine.

The gpu oc works fine in my testing, but you may have difference results.

Id suggest that you just use windows on the system and use windows storage spaces for the drives, or if you really want a vm look into proxmox, exsi, or xen.

You could also run windows as the native OS and hyper-V a storage server.  Might not get as much performance with the nas that way, but would probably be better for your windows and gaming experience.

***If you have professional windows - home windows does not have hyper-v***

There's something cool here - you just can't see it.

Thanks for the comments guys.  I suppose I choose unRAID initially because i thought there would be more flexibility with the dockers and plugins.  Before i built this PC i was simply going to by a pre-built NAS solution such as a synology as my only PC is one issued from my employer so i wanted to be able to store personal data at home.  When i saw the Linus video i realized that this solution was even better as it gives me the option to have my own PC at home as well that i can use to edit photos and videos but still have the functionality of a NAS.

That said, I am interest in listening to the Windows Storage Space solution.  Can you guys comment to that and its functionality?  I'm assuming i just use windows home sharing to access that drive pool over my home network?  Can you replace a HDD in the pool with a larger one without losing data?  Are windows home sharing files view able by Macs?  I know this is a lot of quesitons but maybe i did go about this backwards and i should just have a windows 10 based system and use built in sharing and storage pools...
