I recently built a new computer and would like to know how long the current build will last and what may want to be replaced within the years to come. My current build is as follows.

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor

GPU:  EVGA GeForce GTX 960 4GB SuperSC ACX 2.0+ Video Card

CPU Cooler:  Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler

Mobo:  Gigabyte GA-Z170-HD3 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard

Ram:  Kingston HyperX Fury Black 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2133 Memory

HDD:  Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

SSD: Samsung 850 Evo 250GB

Tower:  NZXT S340 (Black/Blue) ATX Mid Tower Case

PSU:  EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

Monitor:  BenQ GL2460HM 24.0" 60Hz Monitor

Tower Fans:  Cooler Master SickleFlow 69.7 CFM 120mm Fanx2(bought them because tower had two extra fan slots)

about 12 minutes,

build is fine, maybe get a bigger SSD

and yo might want to upgrade the GPU if the 960 runs out of power for the newer games, depending on your resolution, though if you go too high end you probably want an i7 to go with it

its impossible to say, because it depends what you do

I mean in 1-2 years its probably going to struggle to play the latest games at good settings

It kind of depends on how the market will develop but it might turn out you will need more RAM in the years to come but luckily you won't have to replace anything, just put in 1 or 2 more sticks.

Going SLI is also an option when your graphics runs out of juice.

And I wouldn't be too worried about your CPU. 6th gen i5 should set you up for a few years as far as gaming goes.

Aside from the GPU (I'll come to that after this), the build will last for at least 3-4 years! But it depends on your craze for future-proof-ness and upgradability.

Now the GPU, the 960 is already being replaced by the GTX 1060, that offers more than 2x the performance of the 960, and the 960 might be able to run later games satisfactorily, unless you aggressively dial-down the graphics settings. If you're yet to build this PC, here are my suggestions:

  • Forget the 960 - get the 1060 / RX 480 (or 970, if the ones before are too expensive)
  • Add an SSD - even a moderately-fast one (but don't compromise on reliability - read up on many reviews) - it will make a massive all-round performance increase!

Nothing to see here ;)

For SSDs, the PNY CS1311 seems pretty good. Fast, good reviews, and beautiful.

Why the hell do you suggest getting an SSD when the guy clearly stated that he already has a decent one?

I meant a bigger one, I have over 1TB of SSD space and still want more

How long it last will depends on what your requirements are.

If you're requirements are 4K gaming @ 30Hz, it already fails.

If you're requirements are 1080p gaming @ 60Hz, then it's teetering on the edge.

But having more SSD storage doesn't impact how long his rig will last since having SSD storage at all is a matter of convenience as far as gaming goes (don't get me wrong, I'm using an SSD myself), so buying more SSDs makes no sense if he's on budget.

We dont know his budget, or his uses. maybe he just sits on paint all day, or maybe he is a programmer for chinese intelligence

Maybe his expanding game library wants to be installed on SSDs for faster load times and to avoid any streaming problems

maybe he just wants to buy a better GPU

We dont know his budget either, he never said he was on a budget, he asked how long will this last, and what could he upgrade for future usage

He's worried about how long his new rig will last and he said that he bought it recently, so I think it's a safe bet that he's on a budget. And besides more storage is a really obvious upgrade path to be taken in specific situation (running out of space obviously), and I honestly doubt that he doesn't know it if he can build a computer.

You dont really need to take over this whole thread, i just said, you could get a bigger SSD,  as have the others, or maybe they didnt see it in the build

Pretty much everyone mentioned a GPU upgrade and potentially a CPU upgrade in the future depending on what resolution he games at and what games

plus if he knows how to build a computer, he doesnt need you to babysit him and can make his own mind up of which advice to follow

Can't blame me for trying to prove what I think is right.

@ShadowCaptain has a valid reason... but I simply didn't notice the SSD chosen by the OP! Thanks for pointing it out! Oops :S...
