File Sharing Server?

Hello guys!

I'm new to this forum, however I have asked all over for this and so far no solution has been found!

 

I hope I don't sound silly asking this.

I currently have one computer with all of our family videos and pictures on, I access this computer's files through a network shared folder. However I can obviously only access this while on my home network.

Is there a way to make all my computers files instantly accessable (able to stream video from). It would be an advantage to be able to gain access to the files from iphones, tablets and laptops when we are on holiday.

 

Willing to spend some money on this!

Use a FTP like FileZilla. Setting up a server for it can be quite tricky, though it works.

Would it be very expensive to get a website setup so i could access all my files?

A Domanian name is normally 20 a year, depending on the name. 

 

Static IP(not needed, but nice) is normally 50 dollars a year to your isp.

 

If you want hosting, something like aws starts at around 100 a year.

Why not just use Plex? It's waaayyy esier than FTP or aws, and it can adgust for IP changes automatically. Just install the Plex server on each media computer, then open a port for each one on your router. The plex client is $5 on mobile devices and free on computers. Their software has little to no bugs, so you know it will work.

Try something like Plex or AirVideoHD. If most of your videos are home movies, I would recommend AirVideoHD over Plex due to its naming scheme. If most of your media is recorded or ripped, I would recommend Plex for the little extra work involved for all the information that it can provide about movies and shows.
