Skylake Upgrade Thoughts

Hi Guys,

 

I'm currently planning on upgrading my old Sandy Bridge 2500 build with this upgrade and I want to keep it below 800$. Please post your thoughts/suggestions/replacements on my planned build.

Currently running with a GTX 970 (Forgot to mention it)

it may be the best to upgrade the GPU if you're gaming, but for a general purpose machine with the GPU you already have, its usuable. Honestly, I don't know about that PSU but I would personally go for a EVGA G2

oh, that would do wonders im assuming you're gaming at 1080p right?

but honestly, i would wait for the next generation of cpus (sept 2016 or so) for the increased performance.

Everything seems fine, but... I would get a CM hyper (it will be enough) instead of this cooler, so you can get gold certified seasonic psu then.

Change your PSU to a EVGA G2. It is actually a few bucks cheaper for a 650w. Otherwise your setup with do just fine with all games on medium to high settings over the coming years.

Thought about getting a CM Hyper but I wanted to get water cooling for the first time ever.

yes, and im going to assume its also compatible with z170, although not all the features will be.

Isn't it more inspiring to build a custom loop then?

I know, it costs more than AIO, but it's ok.

Anyways, it's up to you to choose.

Starting off slow  custom loop is a bit overwhelming for me at this point. Don't have the luxury of time yet.

I'm using the H100i right now, I can really say it's a good performer.. But at a cost of noise.

x99 for 6c/12t

still viable. if z170/2xx then wait but if x99 get a 6c skylake-e

If he is only gaming at 1080p the GTX 970 will be fine. It makes more sense to upgrade the CPU since it's so old.

Would love to bump that 550w to a 650w in case I need to jump to a 1080 in the future though  How good is that cooler man?

550W is enough for a GTX 1080. The cooler is good you will be able to do some overclocking with it: https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/CRYORIG/H5_Universal/6.html
