I think this is a very good build for 850 dollars. Also if you want you can spend a bit more and get a mobo and cpu that can OC

I wouldn't go cheaper on the SSD. He can still afford 16 GB's of RAM with my build.

It's not like any other SSD brands beside Samsung are total garbage.

The base total is $877 without the rebates and there's no OS so it's possible he might skimp a bit on some other parts if he wants 16gb.

Here's a Red/Black theme with all parts from newegg for shipping convenience.

CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($204.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H170-GAMING 3 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($74.99 @ Newegg)

Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GAMING Video Card  ($279.00)
Case: Corsair Graphite Series 230T Black ATX Mid Tower Case  ($62.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA G2 550W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($70.98 @ Newegg)
Monitor: Acer GN246HL 24.0" 144Hz Monitor  ($169.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $999.91 / actually around ~$1030 not counting rebates

Alt $1100 build, 16gb ram + cpu cooler: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/MsmL2R

Also if you have $170 right now, go ahead and get the monitor. It's $169 atm, and it rarely goes that low.
