Hi guys,

I have recently discovered from programs such as CPU-ID that my i7 4770k is running at 4.6Ghz without going down when the machine is idle. It is also at a high voltage of around 1.360. This is heating up my CPU to around 55-70 (mostly at 62-65) degrees with a liquid temperature of 30-33 degrees according to the readings of the Fan control software by Thermaltake. (Thermaltake 2.0 Extreme). The CPU isn't at full load, only the frequency is at full capacity. I wonder if there's a way to stop what is causing the CPU to work at 4.6Ghz at idle times. This has happened recently and lagging up the whole system. Tried restarting, while playing games with this problem I experienced a blue screen :(

Any suggestions is worth a try.

Thanks

When you overclocked it, did you do it on manual with a fixed Vcore/Multiplier? Get into UEFI and check the settings. Dial in the same settings you did in Dynamic mode. That will make it ramp up to maximum frequency only when needed.

EDIT: If you want your core voltage to be lower, go through the overclocking process in manual mode, and when you're happy with the settings and stability, dial it in to dynamic and exit UEFI. It should run at stock speeds when idle, and overclocked speeds under load.

I did a multiplier 46x100 overclock, and left it as auto for vcore. Board is z87-d3hp.. Don't know how to change to dynamic mode

EDIT: I've tried a system restore for Windows and wiped everything off, to ensure the problem isnt a virus or program.

Did you change any other settings? Go into your Control Panel - Hardware and Sound - Power Options, Click on Change Plan setting or advance, and make sure that your processor power management is at 5% for minimum processor state.

Thanks, must try :) ill tell u how it goes

EDIT: I've tried it and it reads 5% for minimum processor state, stills runs at 3.7 GHz after resetting bios .

First off, never ,never use the Auto voltage setting on your board when overclocking! Auto voltage pushes more electricity towards the CPU and that's one of the main reasons for high temps. Further more Auto voltage is not always that stable and safe. If you value the rest of your processors' life, go and set a manual core voltage in the BIOS.

Now in regard to your question. Please check Intel if Intel Speed Step is on and also make sure that all of the power saving options are enabled (C states, etc.). Most probably one of these settings is off and that's causing your problems with the constant CPU frequency.
