There is no difference between GPUs/CPUs that stop them from working together, AMD/Nvidia GPUs work with Intel CPUs and AMD/Nvidia GPUs work with AMD CPUs.

It might be that he requires CUDA for 3D modelling or he likes Shadowplay for low-hitting recording.

My wife does graphic design and 3D modelling. She says Quadros and FirePros are hardly ever required unless you need double precision.

Honestly, if you're looking for an upgrade now, 1070.
If you can wait, some have said 490 comes in a couple of months. Hopefully AMD pulls an ATI out of their asses.

Go for the 1070. I would wait and see what the 490 has to offer. Don't be a fanboy. Just buy the best product you can for the money, which by the way, well might be AMD. We don't know yet. Also the 1060 and 480 offer great a preformance for well under you budget if you are running at 1080p or even QHD...
