Please vote. These are basically my 2 options for ISP's. I have one more but its a small town one, so I left it out. I live in a remote town

I have CenturyLink. I pay $100 for 10Mb/s and they throttle Youtube so bad I can barely watch 360p videos. Worst ISP ever

Too bad you can't get comcast, they don't care about you, and they'll bend you over and take you dry if you let them, but they provide solid speeds. My only experience with centurylink is much slow always. But I've heard of some small town ISPs being very good options so compare their speeds/pricing to AT&T and decide from there

actually I would give the small town ISP a try, unless you've actually heard bad things about them. Who are they? Even if it's something funky, like a WISP, it could very easily be better than DSL over decades old copper phone lines.

 

Who actually owns the phone lines in your area (who is the ILEC?) and who is the CLEC? The ILEC will charge you more for service, but since they actually own the lines, they will have an easier time repairing issues. If you contract with the CLEC, since they don't own the lines, if an issue occurs they will either say it's not their issue, or it will take forever for the ILEC to get around to fixing the problem, since you aren't actually their customer.

 

TL;DR: Find out whether it is AT&T or Centurylink who owns the phone lines around you. They will provide quicker resolution when there is a problem, even if you end up paying more.

AT&T and Centurylink are both DSL (runs on phone lines), see my comment about finding out who is the ILEC above. Comcast Xfinity is Cable TV based, which is nearly always faster.

 

DSL Pros:

-whatever speed you are able to get on your connection is yours, no sharing with neighbors

-usually low latency, due to the above

DSL Cons:

-the actual speeds you are able to get are very highly dependant on the distance you are from the nearest phone company distribution point. At the edges you might pay for 10+Mbps and barely get 0.25Mbps. Range for DSL IIRC is ~1500 meters. One of my coworkers lives right next to her parents, about 50 feet. Her parents get speeds on DSL of 6-7Mbps, and no packet loss. My coworker gets 0.5-1Mbps and packet loss ranging from 5-75%. That 50 feet is just enough to push her over the edge to where the phone company is physically unable to make improvements - and they have made a good effort to try anyway.

 

Cable Pros: 

-The max speeds you can push down coaxial are much higher than what you can do with phone lines. DSL technologies max out in the tens of Mbps, while DOCSIS 3.1 is reaching almost gigabit

Cable Cons:

-each neighborhood or other group of houses (commonly, all the houses on one side of the street) share a maximum amount of bandwidth at the cabinet. Depending on how many houses there are and how much your neighbors use the internet, you can experience slowdowns at peak times. But for most people, even a slowdown at peak times is faster than what they can get on DSL.
