Watch videos on stuff.  That's what I did and now I have a gaming computer and working on 2 right now

i learnt buy researching cheap older hardware on my local auction site and bought and played around with different things and basicly i guess learnt from trial and error. Started with a athlon 3200+ System and slowly upgraded going thru multiple cpus testing different mbs/overclocks, now same pc running phenom x4 940 BE @3.9ghz. Went thru 3 different cheap mbs etc all in all i learnt a TON about all sort from overclocking ram and cpu to wondering why it wont post when it should. All with the help of the internet, its a solid littl gaming pc costing me barly 200$. Best 200 i ever spent for the hours of playing around i had.

 

not saying this kinda thing is for everyone but if your on a budget and like me know nothing, it could be a great way to learn without hurting the bank.

Everyone learns different.  I started learning how to fix computers just by doing it.  At the time, my laptop took the shit, and I didn't have the money to replace it.  I used online guides, wikihow, reddit, and other sources on how to troubleshoot it.  I did actually fix that laptop also.

After that, I got into a computer repair class in high school.  But what helped me the most was literally sitting at home and taking apart an old computer (which I did get after I did have the money for a new computer at the time).  I would watch videos.  (I actually didn't start watching LTT until last year).  

But doing it yourself, learning from hands on experience and hands on mistakes is the best way to learn.  And of course, asking questions such as here.

Use the net to find your nearest recycling centre and contact them. Establish whether or not you can pay them for some hardware, or take it for free, depending on the nature of how they operate.

 

Play with the hardware, see if you can make a working machine from several donor parts. Learn how to quickly assemble/disassemble without taking shortcuts or doing any harm to yourself. Then, see if you can think of a use for the hardware you've made - it is likely to be old. 

 

The best way to properly LEARN is to DO. Playing with stuff is the best way especially if it isn't expensive, if you break it, you've learnt 1 thing not to do again. Picking up these skills will put you in front of people who have qualifications but no physical experience of what they want to work as. At the college where I work, there is no way I would want to hire someone who doesn't know how to at least build a PC. A lot of problems which appear to be with software are actually down to hardware issues, such as "working" but actually faulty ethernet cables, dying power supplies, dodgy memory, ineffective cooling solutions due to poor care and so on.

 

Watching videos is a good suggestion, but I believe, when you HAVE an actual issue which is specific enough to have its own video so you can find other ways to diagnose the issue and fix it. Just blindly watching every video to do with hardware isn't going to be as fruitful as you'd like to think.

Watch Linus' channels, NCIX, Jayz Two Cents and Paul's Hardware.

 

If you can, try getting an internship in Tech Support, since you'll end up learning way more useful things actually working on stuff than learning the theory.

 

You can also scavenge for old PCs (and/or parts) and mess around with those. Look for free or very cheap stuff so you don't feel bad breaking something
