In that pricepoint, and for that workload, you are probably best off with a prebuilt computer. This is a 300 dollar computer, nearly 400 with windows. Buying smart from a store, or getting a prebuilt on sale, could potentially yield a better computer than this. However this computer will be able to do well the things she wants to do on it. She will not be able to play any fancy video games with it though.

Well, a full build shoud be easily done, especially if you are upgrading. Depending on what you start with, you can probably keep the case and dvd player (if sata), you might want to keep HDD and maybe able to keep RAM an PSU (ram if at least DDR 3 and PSU if it's not incompatible). You should keep the components you already have, or else it's a waste of money.

I got the exact same idea as Zyndo for parts. That would be pretty good for what is needed.

Something like this would do well, a hdd could be added if more storage is needed.
