So, I have watercooled a 3570K and a GTX670. I have the setup running for more than half a year now, but I've just noticed that the GPU back plate gets rather warm (I can still touch it - barely). I always was under the impression that backplates were more for looks than for actual cooling, but feeling this, I'm getting second thoughts about that.

Do you guys know of hot backplates or is this a first for you too?

PS: maybe my standards for hot are a bit on the pussy-side of the spectrum :P

My backplates have always gotten rather warm, despite what others say they do provide a small amount of passive cooling to vrms and memory :)

They're cooling your VRAM, so yeah, it might get hot.

If all this heat is only from the VRAM, then I'd suspect the chips run nearly at Tjunction when not backplated :S

Of course, that could very well be,

Well, EKWB puts a 'Hot don't touch' sign on their backplates....

If you grab a thermometer the back of your video card gets quite hot.

Just like the back of your CPU socket and VRM.

Its probably down to the GPU more than the vram.

However, if you run Prime95 on cheap ram (heatsinkless) you can touch the chips and feel that it gets very hot.

Feel free to PM for any water-cooling questions. Check out my profile for more ways to contact me.

Hmm, going to search for that on mine :D back in a sec

edit: can't seem to find it :/

Well, I think they did it before they came out with the CSQ design. They might still do it now on the clean CSQ...

Yes, I've thought about that, but -if I recall correctly- the backside of the GPU isn't touching the backplate at all.

You're supposed to put thermal pads on your VRAM modules iirc. That then contacts the backplate.

If you're on AMD, is it possible that it's taking heat from the Northbridge?

a hot backplate while intense gaming is a good backplate, that means it is dissipating a lot of heat, which is good.

Available from 3pm to Midnight Eastern Time (GMT-5). (>'-')> <('-'<) ^(' - ')^ <('-'<) (>'-')> You can't stop the kirby dance.

Yes, I've done that, I meant the actual CPU core itself. Sorry for not being clear :)

As stated in the OP: it's a GTX670 ;) other than that, the Northbridge resides on the motherboard, how would that affect the temperature of my GPU backplate?

Can u go into MS Paint and show me where the heat is coming from? I'm not quite understanding...

Because heat radiates? And I meant AMD processor...

Ah yes, could be possible, but I don't think this amount of heat would be passed on through radiation...

Anyways, this thread wasn't really as a means to identify the source (most likely VRAM) of the heat, but rather to see if it's normal for it to be that (seeing that most people usually say a backplate doesn't really do a lot cooling wise)

They did, they have pads on the back.

The heat is normally just absorbed heat radiating from the card, very few backplates actually touch and play any part in cooling,my Watercool plates dont touch but still get warm. The VRM chucks out a good amount of heat thru the PCB.

The primary use of back plates is stopping the PCB warping, this is a common issue with heavy blocks.
