Something that's been plaguing my mind. I'm putting my build together.

I have to get a monitor still and will most likely end up grabbing a 27" 1080p 60hz

I'd like to be able to run games on max settings while hitting 60fps

GTX 1060

runs about $280 for a decent aftermarket model (msi gaming x)

6gb of Vram

Is 6gb of Vram going to be enough for titles coming out in the next few years?

Likely to be able to run games coming out in the next few years at 1080p60fps?

GTX 1070

runs about $440 (EVGA 3.0 ACX SC)

8gb of Vram

Is it worth the additional $160 to have 8gb of Vram and future proof

1440p at at least 60fps on max settings?

Edit:They both do well at max/high settings at 1080p and 1440p. So is the 1070 worth the additional $160? Is it future proofing?

A rule of thumb:

1080p = 1060

1440p = 1070/980Ti

1060 is for 1080p is you like lowering some settings to achieve a constant 60 FPS. 1070 is for 1080p if you like playing graphically-intensive games at max settings, and maintaining 60+ FPS. The 1070 also provides some good future-proofing.

Check out my 1070 performance graphs in this thread:

Also, look at this video of Witcher 3 being played at 1080p on an i7 5820K:

The 1060 is delivering 36 - 49 FPS, though running screen-capturing could be lowering its performance a bit. But, the 1070 in my rig gives me 63 - 84 FPS, at 1920x1200 resolution, and with all settings maxed, except for Hairworks AA, which I have at 4x.

Here's my Witcher 3 performance with an overclocked 1070:

If you're intending to be able to play with maxed visual settings in graphically-intensive games, then the 1070 definitely wins over the 1060 for 1080p gaming.
