Clock dropping Mhz speed?

I have been noticing a interesting issue lately and I am not sure what to do about it. I was able to overclock my EVGA GTX 980 Ti FTW to a stable 1.5Ghz, counting in GPU boost. But I've noticed that when I first boot a game it will run at 1.5Ghz. A few minutes later, the clock speed will drop to 1.4Ghz and stay there the rest of the game.

Nvidia driver version 368.81

 

If anyone could help me understand why this is happening that would be welcomed. I mean 1.4Ghz isn't bad at all, I'd just like to know why it doesn't like holding at 1.5Ghz.

That's not logical considering my temps are very low and my high availability is high. I set my PC to high performance mode because power saving is crap. Like I hate the idea of saving power.

That screenshot is pretty useless... post a screenshot under load, then we can talk.

 

Also, please tweak afterburner's graphs to show GPU clock and voltage.

For the GPU itself though? Have you tried increasing the power limit in your OC program?

Seconding a screenshot of this phenomenon while under load with the inclusion of temperature, load, clock speeds, power limit usage if available, and voltage.

Go into GPU Z and play a game or benchmark during it tab out and check the the bottleneck. It will say power limit, voltage, unstable or whatever it may be

As request. I just noticed when it hit 1.5Ghz there was a short yellow line at the top of the core clock speed. Screenshot under load. What does that mean?

That line just means that the number is going over the max showed in the graph, which is 1500 in this case. Ignore it if you will.

 

Anyways, as I thought, this is just GPU Boost doing it's thing. It's trying to please it's thermal, power and voltage likings by reducing the boost in 1 stage. Your card is acting as expected.

You may say that you have plenty of power, cooling and voltage, and I'd say the same myself... but GPU Boost disagrees heavily on that, so it pulls the clocks down, whether we like it or not. And the best part is: there's nothing you can do about it, other than mod your bios to get rid of it.

You just need to keep it under 65*C. The stage is just a term i threw in because the card will downclock after you hit certain temps. 

 

AMD cards don't have this so the term isn't used so much.
