Unidentified network (ethernet)

Hello,
So i was asked to repair a network connection problem on a laptop (it's an old HP pavilion dualcore running windows vista SP2 home premium). The problem is that any time i connect an ethernet cable it tries to identify and fails resulting in unidentified network. Wifi works. Internet provider confirmed that the connection to household is good. I can't check the router, it is unreachable. Anyway, I took it to my home and the same problem, no connection through ethernet.
I have tried: cmd commands like flushdns, deleted route 0.0.0.0, reseted ipv4, ipv6 and so on. checked services, and all necessary are running. The cable is good(I tried a diferent computer and it connected no problem), tried adding registry files to set the policies. I read other similar threads, none of them helped. None of the solutions did anything. ipconfig shows that ip address is 169.xxx. reinstalled network drivers. tried booting up in safe mode with networking, same problem. tried setting static ip and gateway - nothing. I dont know what else to try.

Anyone have any ideas?

Try to borrow, if you have one available, or buy a usb network card for the laptop. The integrated network card on the laptop is probably malfunctioned,         because the cable you tried works.

Can this not be some Vista bullcrap and maybe instaling windows7 ultimate solve the problem? I am hesitating to reinstall, because of all the work

Although that would explain why wifi is working

Reinstalling will take time ofc. But if you have a windows 7 ultimate key already then that would likely work good since a network crap thing with Vista is likely the fault, the other one being network card. I recommend you to have responses from different members than I before you install go ahead and install win 7. Someone might have a better answer than I//
