GPU fan going from 0 to 100 real quick!

EBDoesStuff

Hey guys! So, while I was gaming I noticed that my GPU (MSI GTX 970 4GD5 OC) went from being quiet all the way to full fan speed. Now, I know this is normal but the problem is, it kept turning on and off at the most obscure things imaginable! it even went crazy as nothing really intensive was going on in the game. Before I started my computer I heard my power supply (EVGA Supernova 650 g2) make alarming grinding noises. I tilted my computer a bit and it was gone, I experienced it one time before when my computer was flat on the floor (I think) can it be my power supply providing an non efficient amount of power to my GPU? What can I do to fix this? If it's my GPU, not to worry. I plan to pick up an ASUS 1080 OC edition soon. If it's my power supply..oh god, I only bought that thing a year ago. Anyway, thanks for your time!

Hi there! I dont want to freak you out but I think its your power supply. If its making grinding noises, there must be something wrong or something fell into the fan. Because you left your PC on the ground flat, the air might not circulate and it could have overheat the motor.  If you still have a warranty, please make a support ticket @  http://www.evga.com/about/contactus/ .

Sounds like a PSU problem. I'd definitely get that RMA process going and NOT use your computer again until you receive a new one.

No worries, 7 year warranty. My PSU is facing downwards and like I said I only THINK my computer was flat at the time. Thanks dude.

I wouldn't use it regardless until you got a new one. Grinding noise is not normal. If your PSU is about to go, you stand a good chance of it taking other components on the way out.

EVGA's support is pretty decent so they should be able to help you

And judging by the grinding noise, it may be an issue with the PSU fan and not the electrical bits

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

Do you think it might be a problem with my HDD?

The onry way to find out is to hear it again and look for where it's coming from, but it never hurts to fire up crystaldiskinfo
