[BUDGET BUILD] i3 or i7? weird scenario

So weird scenario here.

I was recommended an i3 6100 for my budget build, but I found a listing on Kijiji for an i7 3820. Which according to UserBenchmark:

 http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-3820-vs-Intel-Core-i3-6100/m739vs3511

Is 14% faster.

The thing is, the i7 3820 is old. But it's faster and I found it for 110$ Canadian.

And I don't know if it's a good choice either because a motherboard that supports this CPU might be outdated and might not be a good choice for the future probably due to compatibility reasons.

I'm new to PC building and I know this might sound dumb, but help plz.

If you can get a motherboard for a decent price then I would go with the older i7. Alot of the Sandy/Ivy motherboards are being gouged since they are harder to find now that it is an older chip.

Just DO IT.

Thats a 6 core i7 vs a 2 core i3. Sandy bridge/ ivy bridge has aged well and is still performing great, even on CPU demanding tasks. Trust me, not a lot of games run great on 2 cores but lots of games can run great on a bit slower hexacore CPU.

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

you will need a X79 Search your local craigslist to see if any are on their, or maybe Amazon as well. Likely they will be expensive though, like in the 300+ range due to their age and availability.

Yeah I was going to say X79 is very Uncommon and insanely expensive. Better go for an I3 or something older but not so old like something from the 4th gen.

3820 was Sandy-E, 4 core

3930K was 6 core, as was 3960X

The first extreme edition 8-core was 5960X
