Hey

Right now i am running WIndows 7 and i am currently using Microsoft Security Essentials and was wondering what antivirus software you would recommend both free and premium

How much do you in reality get for paying for antivirus software?

Thanks in advance

You are fine with MSE. It is fairly decent at real time protection. Make sure you have windows bit defender on as well and also download the free version of malwarebytes. Leave MSE on the whole time but if you want to run a virus scan, use malwarebytes. It picks up viruses better than most other antivirus software.

I like AVG Free 2014. It does the job and stays out of the way.

Yes, AVG Free 100%. Make sure you don't pay for it, it just adds useless crap.

ESET NOD 32 is the best that I've ever used, but you do have to pay for a license.

There is no best anti-virus as nothing is infallible but there are some that are better than others such as Webroot, kaspersky, & Outpost Security Suite for personal home/mobile general use. No free anti virus is good and AVG has taken the route of Avast to give the user false security with notifications of virus blocks when they are in fact false positives and don't let me start on nod32 and symantec. The really good anti-virus programs cost thousands of dollars and are tailored to suit you needs as Linus has found out.

@fc0712

Get Bitdefender, Norton (my favorite), AVG, or Avast.

Or, go free and get Microsoft Security Essentails. Best free software out there.

Folding for LTT since April 2016.

No free anti virus is good...

Whats your definition of good? Are you referring to AV for home users or business users? I think mine and a lot of other computers running free antivirus would beg to differ with your statement. I've been using MSE (free) along with MalwareB (free version) and it has kept me safe for years.

+1 on webroot secureanywhere. One of the lightest antivirus(if not the lightest) and doesn't have as much recognition as it deserves.

My definition of good is an anti-virus performing as it should, to keep your system clean and protected. I am referring my views to both home and business users. MSE is on par with Nod32 and it is not really ok if you have not real important stuff on your home/business PC from real hackers, the type that likes to use IP addresses against themselves, meaning spoofing IP & packet and what ever else they do, malformed IP packet iteration etc. to gain access to and retrieve data from your system. Malware bytes is a good anti-virus as well but it is more a reactive anti-virus than being proactive and in my experience, a proactive anti-virus is all ways best.

I don't mind you or anyone disagreeing with me and also presenting a counter view to my view because that is one of the things that i like this forum for, sharing views.

IMO, any good to great anti-virus must be part of a total internet security suite which would include a proper firewall for the best protection. Not all Firewalls are the same. Another thing is that no anti-virus program should be used year after year unless you try others to validate its performance to deem it better as the attacks and the internet changes on a regular basis and security issues maybe overlooked.

I was once a believer in AVG back in 2005 & early 2006 until i did Computer Forensics and we were shown how most - no anti-virus is infallible and what PC users think is security is actually a false sense of security.

Agreed. When my Outpost PRO Security Suite expires i plan on buying a subscription for Webroot and check it out.
