Memory - What's the number next to it?

I have wondered what the number after the type of RAM means. Example: Crucial Ballistix Elite 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR4-2666 . What does the 2666 mean and does it affect the performance of my RAM? Thanks!

The "2666" is the MHz of the RAM, it's basically the speed, but it doesn't affect it too much from my understanding.

If you can get a higher speed kit for about the same price or a few bucks more, go for it.

It stands for the frequency it runs at. Depending on what you do, it may / may not affect performance.

Toa point, the higher the better. BUT, higher frequencies usually come at the cost of latency compromises, which can make the gains null or even decrease performance in some cases.

(And btw, that's assuming your mobo can OC RAM, aka Z170 or X99)

Is a higher number better or worse?

Higher is better. More speed.

Edit: Higher is better, FOR THE MOST PART. @Imakuni explained it really well.

My MOBO is the Asus ROG STRIX X99 GAMING. Does that support Overclocking RAM?

It can be, especially on DDR4. If it was DDR3, then it would be pretty stupid.

How can I check if it is or isn't? (if it is the effective speed?)

Actual speed is half. But it's DDR (double data rate), so it's effectively what they advertise.

IT CAN BE???

Are you telling me, or you are guessing?

Effective speed of (for example DDR2 800) is actually 400. It was same for DDR (1, 2 and 3).

Why it should be different for DDR4?

That is what I've said: "Cut it in half". Half of 2666 is actually 1333 which is very fast.

OK. Also, should I go with the Crucial Ballistix Elite 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 UDIMM instead of the Crucial Ballistix Elite 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR4-2666 RAM?

If it's the same price or close, sure!

Yup.....it's Double Data Rate since 2000. but even back than, speed of Ram was cut in half.

Depends on what you want to use it for and what are the timings of each kit.

Didn't realize arguing was productive, or informative. DISCUSSING would be the proper term I believe.
