I am trying to make a configuration much like the link listed below. I want to run 1 or 2 computers as VMs and additionally run a NAS storage system. I want to store in RAID 6 or 50 but I don't want to break the bank with a RAID card. Any good recommendations for a RAID card that supports 8 HDDs under $200? If not I might just use the RAID 10 setting on the motherboard (Rampage V).

Thanks in advance for the help,

Leer

UPDATE: This is a canidate for raid 6 but has no RAID 50. Only supports 2TB drives. http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/archives_Division/12400_div_v7/12400_div.HTML

What os are you using. If your using linux you can make a raid in btrfs/zfs/md and you won't need a raid card.

I wouldn't use a raid card if you don't have to, just use the onboard sata.

If you really want on get a used h700 on ebay for around 50.

Sorry I forgot the basic rules of tech posting. Unraid like in the video with windows 10 VMs.

Do you really need RAID 5 or 6 with such a small amount of HDDs? I have my home server in RAID 10 and I don't have any problems with that.

I should of clarified I want a card that allows for expansion into 12+ HDD RAID configurations. Like I said as well RAID 10 is my backup plan, but I'm not so fond of loosing half of my storage space if I don't have to.

With unraid you dont actually want a RAID card. you just need enough ports to support your drives. unraid will actually be what you set the RAID level in which is doing software RAID. if you do the RAID as hardware RAID you wont be able to accomplish what you are wanting.
