Hi @ all,

I'm new to this topic but thinking about getting an NAS and moving my Document/Images/Music stuff off my computer and onto the network when I'm moving into my own flat this fall (and finally become Admin of the network I'm using bound to^^). However, I'm rather new to the topic, so I'll want to get some input/ insight in the topic first. I have a rough idea of what prebuild NAS systems à la Synology / QNap are capable off (which seem fine for what I want) but I'd appreciate a good read to get a better / bigger picture on what's availlable / possible with "Off the shelf systems"  vs selfmade storage server.  Anybody got any recommendations?

Best regards

Chris

With Qnap and Synology you will get good performance, reliability, and lots of additional features than just file storage. If you don't have any previous experiences with something like FreeNas etc. I would not try to build first NAS yourself (mainly because chance of bad configuration resulting in data loss). But if you are interested in servers and stuff, definitely buy some used/cheap or use old PC laying in basement and start tinkering with some NAS solutions, and maybe your next network storage can be "selfmade".

Alright, thanks to you both. I guess that I'll start with Product Reviews / Tests of some prebuilds. I guess I have all the components for a tinkerer's build lying around - once I'm done with my Grad studies, there might be time for that :P
