So I'm in the process of upgrading my one of my desktops to windows 10 and I have been waiting because I wasn't sure that it has all the requirements because it's an old computer.

I have tried to install windows 10 about 3 or 4 times and the closest I have gotten is the windows 10 logo frozen with some sort of artifacting on the screen as if the gpu was overclocked but it's not overclocked.

I also get a windows update error code: C1900101-20017.

Here's my interesting setup:

Also can someone please verify that Intel core 2 duo E6600 is 64 bit because my pc is confusing me as it says that it is a 32 bit only cpu.

EM64T / Extended Memory 64 technology / Intel 64

That means it's 64-bit, but it's likely that the OS you have installed is 32-bit.

@demonix00 If the CPU really is 64 bit the why won't the 64 bit version install?

I have genuine windows 7 upgrade discs, 32 bit and 64 bit and they were unused.

also the system properties says that it is "x86 based pc" and it should say something like "32 bit OS, 64 bit processor".

32 bit windows upgrades to 32 bit windows. If you want 64 bit then you need to install a 64 bit Win 7 or 8 and upgrade.

The only thing I can guess as to why it's only showing up as a 32-bit system is that HP has done something to lock out the 64-bit extensions on the processor (or the board itself is limited in some way).

Check the BIOS to see if there's anything related to 64-bit that is disabled.

No. If an 32bit OS is installed you cant not upgrade it to a 64bit OS. In order to get a 64Bit OS the OP will have to install a 64 bit Win 7 or Win 8.1 and upgrade from that. Thats how it works, thats how it has always worked.

I suggest that you read that post again @Donut417 because at no point did I ever mention an operating system.

The OP clearly states that the OS is picking up the processor as 32-bit only which isn't the case, and the only way that could be happening is if something (in this case the BIOS) is interfering and restricting the processor to 32-bit only which is why I suggested that the OP look through the BIOS to see if there's anything related to 64-bit or EM64T that is disabled which would at least get the CPU properly identified even if it's a 32-bit OS.

He tried installing WINDOWS 10 3 or 4 times and it doesnt work. If you actually looked at his setup you would have seen hes using WINDOWS 7 32bit. If you try to upgrade a 32bit OS to a 64 bit OS its going to bitch. That is the reason he is having install issue.

To confirm Intel indicates it is a 64bit chip. http://ark.intel.com/products/27250/Intel-Core2-Duo-Processor-E6600-4M-Cache-2_40-GHz-1066-MHz-FSB

So my suggestion of installing a 64bit OS stands!
