so i have a galaxy s7 edge snapdragon 820 edition, and i would like to make some modifications. First, i would like to be able to lower the resolution for better battery life. i tried this in some capacity, but the screen was too blurry with no noticeable effect on battery life, so id like a more effective way to do this. second, id like to set the phone up to use only the 4 low power cores on the snapdragon 820. i realize that this is the setup in low power mode, but i would like just the 4 low power cores without any of the other settings changed by low power mode. also, if you have any ideas on how to further increase battery life using hidden methods, id love to hear them.

Screen resolution doesn't really do much, it's screen brightness that eats into the battery more. You also can't control which cores get used unless you go down into the firmware. So unless you have a custom ROM that has that level of control, you're SOL on that front. And even then, it maybe the hardware itself that exposes and controls the cores so software can't touch this at all.

If you want some tips:

  • Turn off Wi-Fi and BT if you're not using it
  • Turn off your data
  • Turn off location services (i.e. GPS)
  • Look at your apps and see if any of them are running in the background and kill those that are not essential
  • Leave your phone still for as long as possible, this lets Android kick in a super-sleep mode.

The SnapDragon 820 only has 2 low power cores and 2 high power cores. The best way to get the best battery life from your phone is to use it the way it was intended- without disabling any functions or features. When you disable or turn off things, you will only make your phone less functional and in some cases, end up with worse battery life.

Turning off functions such as Bluetooth, data, gps etc can be a great way to save battery assuming you don't use those things, ofc you can be selective in what you have on. I just think its actually wrong to say that it will 'Only make your phone less functional'. No turning these things off will save you power, and if at the end of the day your phone is dead and you still need it then its defiantly not very functional.
